AFK – Everything You Need To Know

If you are a foreign graduate dentist, you must pass four exams administered by the National Dental Board of Canada. The Assessment of Fundamental Knowledge (AFK) exam is the first exam that you must take during your equivalency journey to becoming a licensed dentist in Canada. Here is everything you need to know about the AFK exam. 

What Does the AFK Exam Cover?

The AFK exam is a computer-based exam that covers fundamental topics crucial for dental practice, including biomedical and applied clinical sciences. Candidates who pass this exam demonstrate a high level of understanding and knowledge of the core concepts of dentistry.

Format

• You will have 200 multiple-choice questions consisting of single answers to complete on your exams. 

• You must complete two sections.

• Each section must be completed within the allotted two-hour time frame. 

How can the AFK Exam be Taken?

The AFK is offered at designated examination facilities, which are paper-based, and Prometric testing centers, which are computer-based.

Exam Sessions 

This exam can be taken in February and August of each year. 

Passing Score 

To pass this examination, you must receive a test-equated score of at least 75%. Each question is worth one mark. Wrong answers will not cost you any marks. 

Attempts 

You will only be permitted a maximum of three attempts for the AFK exam.

Eligibility 

Before you become eligible to write the AFK exam, you must first gain approval to start your dental equivalency journey in Canada by applying for this process. If the NDEB finds that you are eligible to start working towards your licensure, you can proceed to registration for the AFK examination. 

How to Apply for the NDEB Equivalency Process 

1. Learn about what documents will be required of you by visiting the NDEB website. Then proceed to gather the necessary documents for beginning your application.
2. Open an NDEB Connect account. Your NDEB account is where you can start and submit your applications and register for your equivalency exams in the future. 
3. Use your account to submit the documents that you gathered in step one along with a completed equivalency process form.

How to Register for the NDEB-AFK Exam in Three Steps 

1. Register for your NDEB examination by accessing your NDEB account and paying any applicable examination fees. 
2. Await for an email from the NDEB that provides instructions on how to schedule your exam with prometric. 
3. Visit Prometric’s website to schedule your AFK examination.

Please note that approval of registration can take up to 18 weeks.
