Our Prep Doctors Careers in Dentistry series is an opportunity for you to peek behind the curtain of various avenues of dentistry you can take from a career and business perspective. Hosted by our Compliance and Education Specialist, Dr. Lesia Waschuk, we sit down with highly regarded dentists to discuss the career paths they are in, the challenges and benefits of the field, and how you can get started on your dentistry journey.
In our second installment of the series, Dr. Waschuk speaks with Dr. Gevik Malkhassian about his decision to pursue a dental specialty in Canada after 11 years of general dental practice experience. As a practising endodontist, Associate Professor at the Faculty of Dentistry of the University of Toronto, and director of the International Dentist Advanced Placement Program (IDAPP), Dr. Malkhassian dives into the differences between a general dental practice and specialties, where a dentist can develop meaningful relationships of trust, choosing to focus on specific disciplines, and the importance of being a dental specialist with advanced technical skills and theoretical knowledge. Watch the full interview below or on our YouTube page here.
So, what’s Dr. Malkhassian’s advice when pursuing a career in dentistry?
“Follow your passion, and take the time to figure out what you like to do. Age should not prohibit you from being what you want to be and there is no time limit on pursuing a dental specialty. Dentistry is like an ocean with room enough for all of us!”
