Cadaver Surgery & Anatomy Training

Prerequisite: Mastering the Basics of Surgery

ADMISSION RESTRICTION — Educational Rationale

This course is restricted to licensed dentists who have previously completed Prep Doctors’ Mastering the Basics of Surgery course. This restriction exists for the following educational reasons:

  • Cadaveric training requires foundational familiarity with surgical instrumentation, tissue handling, and extraction sequencing to derive meaningful learning benefit.
  • Participants without a surgical baseline cannot safely or productively engage with advanced cadaveric dissection and full-arch clearance workflows.
  • The instructor-to-participant supervision model is calibrated for participants who do not require introductory surgical instruction.

Enrollment verification: Prior course completion is confirmed through Prep Doctors’ participant records. If you are unsure whether you qualify, contact Prep Doctors before registering.

Course Overview

Build Real Surgical Confidence on Real Anatomy

Surgical workflows and clinical protocols are taught in the classroom — but tactile surgical competence is built through repetition on real tissue. This course bridges that gap with a fully supervised cadaveric training environment designed specifically for dentists who have completed foundational surgical education and are ready to elevate their hands-on skill.

Participants work with real human cadaver tissue at a ratio of one cadaver per two participants, guided throughout by an experienced instructor. You will navigate actual anatomical structures, experience true tissue resistance, and build the muscular memory that simulations cannot replicate.

IMPORTANT NOTICE TO PARTICIPANTS

Participation in this course does not authorize, certify, or guarantee clinical competency in oral surgery. Participants are responsible for practicing within their professional registration, legal scope of practice, training, and applicable regulatory requirements. Participants are cautioned that cadaveric training does not substitute for supervised live-patient clinical experience, and that new surgical techniques or procedures should not be incorporated into clinical practice without adequate additional supervised clinical exposure. Prep Doctors Corp does not assume liability for the misuse or unsupervised application of any technique, workflow, or clinical concept presented in this course.

Course Objectives

By the end of this course, learners will be able to:

The following written educational objectives identify the expected learner outcomes for this continuing education activity. These objectives were developed by the administrative authority in consultation with the planning committee and course instructor, and are published in advance to enable participants to assess course suitability.

  1. Identify and describe the anatomical structures, danger zones, and vital landmarks relevant to oral surgical procedures using cadaveric dissection.
  2. Demonstrate correct flap design and tissue handling technique, including incision planning, reflection, and anatomically correct repositioning on real human cadaver tissue.
  3. Execute a full mouth clearance extraction sequence with appropriate surgical ergonomics and access management under instructor supervision.
  4. Apply systematic surgical extraction workflows to cadaveric specimens, integrating appropriate instrumentation selection and sequencing.
  5. Recognize in real tissue the anatomical damage points, complication risks, and structural limitations encountered in surgical exodontia.
  6. Describe the criteria for referral to or co-management with an oral and maxillofacial surgeon.
How This Course Is Taught

This course uses a participation-based educational format. All activities involve active hands-on practice on cadaveric specimens under direct instructor supervision. A minimum of 30% of course time (and in practice substantially more) involves active participant manipulation of cadaveric tissue, qualifying all awarded credits as participation credits under both ADA CERP Standard VI and AGD PACE Standard XI.

Lecture and demonstration components precede each hands-on station to orient participants to the anatomy, technique, and clinical rationale before hands-on practice begins.

Training Modules

Module

Method

Description

Anatomy Orientation

Lecture + Demo

Systematic review of oral and maxillofacial anatomy with cadaveric dissection orientation, identifying structures, boundaries, and danger zones.

Surgical Extraction Workflow

Hands-On

Complete surgical extraction protocol from instrumentation selection through socket management and closure planning.

Vital Structure ID

Guided Discussion

Recognition and localization of the inferior alveolar nerve, mental foramen, maxillary sinus floor, and adjacent anatomical boundaries.

Surgical Ergonomics

Hands-On

Correct operator positioning, instrument angulation, retraction technique, and access control for safe surgical execution.

Credit Allocation & Record Keeping

This course awards 7 continuing education credits under the participation category. Credit is calculated based on actual contact time, excluding meals, breaks, and registration periods. Because a minimum of 30% of course time involves active hands-on manipulation of cadaveric specimens under direct instructor supervision, all awarded credits are classified as participation credits in compliance with AGD PACE Standard XI and ADA CERP Standard XIV.

Prep Doctors Corp designates this activity for 7 continuing education credits.

Credit Classification:

  • Method: Participation (hands-on cadaveric training under direct supervision)
  • Contact time: 7 hours (420 minutes) of actual instructional/participation time, excluding meals and breaks
  • Participation threshold: Course exceeds 30% hands-on requirement — majority of course time is active cadaveric practice

Record Keeping:

  • Participants will receive a written verification of attendance/participation upon completion of the full course.
  • Verification documents will include all required fields: provider name, PACE ID, participant name, date, location, course title, AGD subject code, educational method, credit hours, and recognition statements.
  • Participant records will be maintained for a minimum of 7 years in compliance with AGD PACE Standard XI and 6 years per ADA CERP Standard XIV.
  • AGD member attendees: credits will be submitted electronically to the AGD through the AGD online roster within 30 days of course completion.

RCDSO NOTE

CE course candidates who are not registered with the RCDSO cannot claim continuing education credits for any continuing education completed before their date of registration with the RCDSO. Dentists are responsible for tracking CE through their RCDSO e-Portfolio.

Educational Rationale

This course was developed based on identified educational needs of Prep Doctors’ surgical training alumni. Needs assessment was conducted through:

  • Post-course participant feedback and evaluations from Mastering the Basics of Surgery cohorts
  • Direct participant surveys identifying demand for advanced tactile surgical skill development beyond simulation
  • Advisory committee input and review of professional literature on cadaveric training efficacy
  • Administrative authority analysis of skill gaps identified in surgical CE participants

The identified need: dentists who have completed foundational surgical education expressed a clear demand for advanced hands-on exposure that bridges classroom learning and live patient practice, with real anatomical feedback unavailable in simulation environments.

Content Independence Statement

The educational content of this course has been planned and implemented independently of any commercial influence. No commercial support (financial or in-kind) has been received for this continuing dental education activity. All educational objectives, content development, and instructor selection were conducted independent of any commercial interest, in compliance with AGD PACE Standard XII and ADA CERP Standard V.

Product-specific promotion and product-group advertising are prohibited within and during this CE activity. No commercial exhibits, sponsored presentations, or promotional materials are permitted in the educational space immediately before, during, or after this course.

Tissue Standards & Safety Protocols

This course uses cadaveric human tissue rather than live patients. The following standards apply:

  • All cadaveric specimens are sourced through properly authorized human tissue donation programs in full compliance with applicable federal, provincial, and local laws and regulations governing human tissue.
  • All body donation authorizations and regulatory consents are confirmed with the tissue supplier prior to course delivery.
  • Aseptic conditions, appropriate personal protective equipment, and biohazard handling protocols are maintained throughout all cadaveric training activities.
  • Emergency care facilities and procedures are in place at the training facility.
  • All instructors are legally authorized and licensed to operate in the jurisdiction where this course is held.
  • Liability insurance coverage is confirmed for all instructors. Participants are required to confirm valid professional liability insurance as a condition of enrollment.

LIABILITY & INSURANCE REQUIREMENT

All participants must maintain valid professional liability (malpractice) insurance and are required to provide written confirmation of coverage upon registration. This is a condition of enrollment per AGD PACE Standard VII and ADA CERP Standard XIII.
